A happy memory

Actually, I never called my life exciting or thrilling. No, it was just normal, nothing interesting ever happened, not until my Uncle died and left me a change behind.

On the 1st of September 1980 my Uncle Aloysius Charleston died. He was a quite wealthy man, actually he was quite rich. Uncle Aloysius was Italian. The rest of my family never liked him; he married my mother’s sister Julia, who disappeared 20 years ago. My whole family thought that he had something to do with it, but I didn’t think so, I still visited him, I was the only family member who came to visit him. I guess that’s also the reason, he left me all his stuff.

Nobody ever knew about his part of the family, I mean he married my aunt that’s all I know but we never met, his parents or anything. He once mentioned he had a cousin living in America. But as soon as he said it, it looked like he blabbed out something. Since nobody apart from me liked my uncle, it was up to me to organize his funeral. I mean I didn’t mind, it was alright with me.

Since I didn’t know anything about his family, I couldn’t invite anybody, so I just invited my aunt’s part of the family. On the day of the funeral I got the sad news that only 20 people would be coming. It really made me angry. During the funeral, I noticed a guy in the background. He was wearing a black suit, and it looked like he knew uncle Aloysius.

I went over to ask him, he first ignored me, so I told him, if he wasn’t related or at least friends with my uncle I would have to ask him to leave. Well, those made him talk. He introduced himself as “ Lukas Charleston”, and said he was my uncle’s cousin. He was quite surprised my uncle never mentioned him. He told me he’s been in contact with my uncle all the years and he actually thought that Aloysius told us about him and his wife.

This was actually quite surprising, how come he never mentioned his cousin. And how come his cousin wasn’t Italian like him? Strange, but since it was my uncle’s funeral I didn’t think it was right to ask those questions right know, I’d leave it up to later.

After the funeral I felt like I had to invite my uncles cousin to diner at our house, since he was the only relative from my uncle’s part of the family I knew and with came.

The doctors weren’t quite sure why my uncle died. He actually seemed quite healthy to them. They later told me he ate something he was terribly allergic to and that’s the reason he died. Well, I thought it was quite strange, the only thing my uncle was allergic to were champignons and he never ate them. The doctors didn’t have any other theory what could have happened to him.

Well, I didn’t really think that they were wrong, so I believed them. Later at diner I had a conversation with my uncle’s cousin Charleston. He told me that he and my uncle had big fight a couple of years ago, that was also the reason he moved to America. I asked him what the fight was about and why he left the country because of it. Well Lukas Charleston, said it was so long ago and he didn’t want to talk about it anymore.

I offered Lukas to spend the night at our house, since the house of my family was really big there was plenty of space anyway. He agreed, so I showed him the guestroom. Later at, night I woke up. I heard noise coming from my uncle’s old bedroom. I took the shotgun of the wall and went to check what was going on. The bedroom door was opened and the light was on.

I stood next to the door, so that whoever was in there couldn’t see me. I turned my head so I could see inside. I was really surprised to see Lukas Charleston in there. He took the whole room apart. It looked like he was searching for something. Something that must have belonged to my uncle. He looked really exhausted, it must have token him a lot of strength to take the whole room apart.

I was about to leave again and talk to him about it tomorrow, when he took his cell phone out. So I decided to stay and listen who he was going to call. Lukas checked around if anybody was listening, I quickly ducked back behind the door, and started dialling. He spoke really quite, so he wouldn’t wake up anyone.

“Hey mac, I didn’t find it. The old bastard probably hid it somewhere else. Yes, I checked the whole room, oh and by the why, that stupid nephew of his believed me I’m his cousin…” that’s all I heard. After the last sentence I almost let out a scream. I had to get away from here. That guy was dangerous, and he was looking for something, which belonged to my uncle. After all he wasn’t related to him, but who was he then and where was my uncle’s real cousin. I decided that in the morning I’ll check through my uncle’s room once. Maybe that Lukas guy (if that even was his name), didn’t see something, and maybe I could find what he was looking for.

The next day I went to my uncle’s room. To my surprise Lukas cleaned the room and everything looked like before. Of course I couldn’t find anything. Today was also the day I had to go see my uncle’s lawyer. He called me the day before, telling me he had to give me something. I thought it’s going to be one of those papers I had to sign because my uncle died and everything. I met Dr. Wilhelm Morsten at 12 AM for lunch. He was pretending to be very sad my uncle died, but I knew they never really had sympathy for each other. Well, after we finished having lunch, Morsten gave me a letter, which my uncle told him to give to me, when he died. Morsten said uncle Aloysius gave the letter to him a few days before he died, as if he knew he wouldn’t live so long anymore.

I thanked Morsten a lot and told him I had to leave. I was really curios what was in the letter and I didn’t want to read it with Morsten sitting in front of me, giving me that look saying “ come on just tell me what he wrote. I decided I’d read the letter at home. I would take me 40 minutes home by car, but half way home I stopped on a rest station. I couldn’t wait anymore I had to know what it said.

Dear Ben,

If you read this letter, I probably won’t be alive anymore. I told my lawyer, Dr.Morsten, to give it to you. I guess you always knew I don’t really like Morsten, but he’s the best lawyer around here.
I know, I never talked about my family, but I think it is about time, you know about them. Ben, I really need you to know, that there is a guy called Lukas Monet, he is the biggest enemy of my family, he’s been after us for many years and if I’m dead he’s going to be after you.

Anyway, my part of the family is quite rich, but that’s nothing new. About 20 years ago, we started having really big trouble with the Monet family, especially with Lukas Monet. A long time ago my great great Aunt Olivia was married with Markus Monet. Olivia left Markus and after that the Monet’s started this whole fight. We could live with them hating us, but then Olivia got killed. By one of the Monet family.

We never forgave them. It could be that Lukas Monet shows up after my death. Do
