Violet’s House

When I first saw Maidenwood, I didn’t notice the power and the vibrations that surround it. I had a cold though.
Domenic and I were just coming back from our honeymoon and were on our way to visit my new in- laws, all of them including aunts, uncles and cousins. Frightening.
I was a little bit grumpy. The prospect of meeting his whole family a day after the honeymoon while having a cold didn’t exactly increase the bride’s mood.
There, suddenly, out of nowhere, we saw it: Maidenwood – a pretty, if large, house with big windows and a terrace with view of a lake. It was enchanting, exactly the kind of house we had always dreamt of. The sign with “For sale” on it made the decision for us.
Just having sold my bookshop in Kensington and Domenic being a doctor, we were, within two months, the proud owners of Maidenwood.
Domenic opened his practice at Maidenwood itself – he had always wanted to become a country doctor.

Now we have been at Maidenwood for about three months and things are becoming weird.
To give a better explanation of the situation, I have to tell you that I am one of the last few witches in this country who actually know about their powers and how to use them. If I say “witch” I’m not speaking of those fairytale ladies or those having a contract with the devil, I’m speaking of women who are able to see, feel and use the powers of earth. Who can follow the streams of power and find their knots. The knots are important. It’s where the powers are strongest, where you can do incredible things and where incredible things happen.
Maidenwood was built above such a knot. I don’t know how I could have failed to notice that. It must have been the cold.
In itself it shouldn’t be a problem to live at such a place. The thing is: we are not the only ones living here. There is a spirit, a poltergeist, living in our house, probably living out of the energies of the knot.
First it was hard to notice, there were only little incidents, a door or a window would slam shut, a picture would fall of the wall or the floor would creak. Nothing you couldn’t explain naturally. Domenic noticed nothing – being a scientist he doesn’t believe in this kind of things and I never tried to persuade him.
However, yesterday our playful spirit became more obvious. Domenic’s tea cup flew through the kitchen and only stopped when hitting the wall. Not even my beloved husband could find a reasonable explanation for this. The poor man was very confused! And maybe a little bit scared?
Later, when we were sitting in the living room, watching one of Domenic’s favourite TV programs, the TV started to switch on and off, so did the lights!
Today is quiet, at least until now. Domenic is in his practice looking after one of his patients. Caroline Moore I believe. She is one of our neighbours. Widow, attractive, about my age, I better find out what she’s doing here – She didn’t look very ill to me!
I enter the waiting room and there they are. They don’t even look at me. Caroline has one hand on Domenic’s sleeve, caring. “You can’t continue this way. It’s not good to be lonely. Maybe we could dine tomorrow evening. I’ll cook.” Blue eyes glance into his brown ones. The door to his rooms slams. It seems our poltergeist is as indignant as I am.
Domenic winces, than smiles at her. “Yes, that would be nice.” Don’t they notice that I am here?!
The window opens and magazines start to fly through the room. A book misses Caroline just by an inch. She screams and hurries out of the house. Good! Don’t come back!
Now only Domenic and I are left. We face each other. He has hurt me. Ignoring me completely! Flirting with the neighbour! But he has behaved strange for the last months, hasn’t he? He barely ever talked to me. Now he has to. We can’t continue this way.
The poltergeist stops. Domenic is still staring at me. His eyes wide with shock. Unbelieving. “Violet?” There is horror in his voice. He lifts one hand: “Violet.”
